Slime grows rapidly in the system which can
block free water flow and become a hazard for water quality. The slime, which
often grows in condensers and on cooling surfaces of re-circulating systems, can
significantly reduce efficiency. Slime and bio-fouling in spray
ponds that feed cooling systems can cause severe
problems for the facility, by reducing flow rates and pressure.
Biofilm removal and control is critical to the operation and safety of a cooling system. Biofilm has been shown to be a major factor in the occurrence of Legionella, which causes Legionairres disease. The biofilm provides stability, making it more difficult to physically remove Legionella and other pathogens, especially on surfaces with scale or corrosion. About 90 percent of the Legionella bacteria are in the biofilm versus the water stream.
